2007 USF: Led a Bulls offense that has scored a program record 451 points (34.7ppg) and 5,383 yards (414.1tpg) this season. During the season Grothe did it all for the Bulls. Throwing for 2,670 yards with 14 scores, while setting USF quarterback season records for rushing yards (872), rushing TD’s (10), 100 yard rushing games (3) and total offense (3,542). He also set a new school record for yards passing in a game with 382 vs. Cincinnati. Against Pittsburgh, Grothe had an 80-yard TD run, the longest TD run of his career, and the longest TD run by a quarterback in USF history. Grothe’s 19 career rushing TDs, is one shy of the USF record for QBs.
In a 64-12 win over UCF, Grothe completed 15-of-28 passes with two touchdowns, rushed for over 100 yards, adding two scores, and was awarded a MCS Nike game Ball. Against UConn he rushed for career high and USF quarterback record 146 yards, the ninth best rushing day by a QB in BIG EAST history. Grothe is one of those special quarterbacks, a gamer, a competitor, and a warrior. He’s not very big, but has got that something. Call it spunk, moxie, or whatever, but he’s got it. When he’s on the field He can beat you with his arm, legs or his pure will to win.
2006 USFTook over in the first half of the season opener vs. McNeese State when Pat Julmiste went out, and he never lost the job on route to a banner season. He was named the 2006 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and USF’s Offensive MVP and Rookie of the Year in 2006. Was second in the nation among freshmen in total offense, after leading all freshmen in that category for the entire season before he was forced from the Papajohns.com Bowl with an injury. Named The Sporting News BIG EAST Freshman of the Year as well as the BIG EAST all-freshman team. Also an honorable mention Freshman All-America by The Sporting News. Was a two time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors on route to breaking all freshmen records for a QB at USF with 2,576 passing yards, 622 rushing yards, 3,198 total yards and nine rushing TDs. His 63.7 completion percentage is a USF record, regardless of class. Led USF to come-from-behind wins in each of the first three games, including a win at UCF, where he was 21-of-31 for 302 yards with 3 TD's and rushed for 71 yards. Had three TD runs against UConn, and Led USF to a huge win over Pitt, completing 19-of-25 passes, a TD and running for another to become Bowl eligble. Went 25-of-35 for 364 yards against Syracuse. Led the Bulls to a win win over seventh ranked West Virginia in Morgantown.
2006 (Spring) Used his redshirt season to put on 15 pounds of muscle (205lb), and had a strong outing during spring practice, showing that he was one of the more accurate passers on the team and will compete this summer for the starting job.
2005 He was a redshirt Freshmen for the season.
LAKE GIBSON HS:A leader on the field as a Dual-Purpose QB, Grothe was two time first team All-State pick, and was Class 4A Player of the year, finalist for Florida's Mr. Football, and The Old spice Red Zone Florida player of the year.
