If Long Branch (N.J.) High's Miles Shuler
and Timber Creek High's (Erial, N.J.) Damiere Byrd
committed to Rutgers
in the next week, receiver recruiting could be tied in a nice bow and the Scarlet Knights could cross a position off their 2011 list.
However, back in reality, Rutgers is in an interesting spot, in a fun way, with its receiver recruiting.
Rutgers already has a non-binding oral commitment from Cocoa (Fla.) High's Chevelle Buie, who was recruited to play slot receiver, but programs can never have too much speed on the edges.
The Scarlet Knights are in good standing with Shuler, the state 100 meter champ, who holds his state university in high regard.
In handicapping it, Rutgers may be the school to beat, but the race could go a long way if Shuler, as he suggested, trims his list to a final five before making a decision after the season.
Byrd is in a similar position in his recruitment, although Rutgers may not be in as favorable a spot as it is with Shuler. Byrd recently included Rutgers in his top 10, and he has said he is serious about the Scarlet Knights, but questions continue to circulate as to whether or not Byrd would stay in state or go elsewhere.
Byrd, like Shuler, is a speedster. He was .04 seconds behind Shuler in the 100 meters at the state championship, and although they are similar in speed, Shuler is nearly two inches taller.
Jefferson High (Tampa, Fla.) receiver Andre Davis recently listed Rutgers in his top seven, and there is little doubt Scarlet Knights freshman linebacker Fred Overstreet had something to do with it since he graduated from Jefferson High last month.
However, getting Davis away from the Florida schools could be a challenge.
Christopher Columbus High (Miami) receiver Tacoi Sumler says he has interest in the Scarlet Knights, but he is uncertain whether or not he will make a summer visit. He is spending time with relatives in southern California and visiting schools in the west, and said he would travel to Rutgers if it fit into his budget later in the summer.
Another prospect holding a Rutgers offer but hard to read is Fort Hamilton High's (Bronx, N.Y.) Brandon Reddish, camped at Rutgers last Wednesday. Rutgers' recruiting of Reddish has been hot and cold, and lately it has been hot. He has speed and offers from Syracuse and Connecticut as well.
As for the non-offered receivers on Rutgers' board, Robinson High (Tampa) teammates Ruben Gonzalez and Frankie Williams are the two most likely to receive offers after both were impressive at Rutgers' camp last week.
Conestoga High's (Berwyn, Pa.) Dexter Bridge, A.J. Sebastiano of North Broward Prep (Coconut Creek, Fla.) and Tyriek Harrison of Teaneck (N.J.) High remain receivers on Rutgers' recruiting radar as well.
Rutgers secured a high-profile commitment from receiver Chevelle Buie of Cocoa (Fla.) High last week, but its receiver recruiting is far from finished. In this edition of "Recruiting Reset," we take a look at some of the offered players the Scarlet Knights continue to pursue, as well as a handful of receivers yet to receive offers who remain on Rutgers' radar.
Rutgers has a commitment from Chevelle Buie, but plenty of others remain on the board ...
