already offered Chaminade Madonna Prep (Hollywood, Fla.) quarterback Jerrard Randall
, who is set to camp in Piscataway, N.J., later this month, and now a teammate will join him after landing an offer from Rutgers.
Johnathan Aiken, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound cornerback, said he received his written offer from Rutgers in the last few days, and is ready to check out the campus to learn more about the Scarlet Knights.
"Actually, I talked to the head coach (Greg Schiano) and (assistant) coach (P.J.) Fleck the other day when they told me they were going to offer me,'' Aiken said. "(Schiano) was just telling me that he's excited to see me, and he's looking forward to it when I come up to camp.''
Aiken's knowledge of Rutgers is limited, but he is eager to see the campus.
"I don't really know too much,'' Aiken said. "I watch them on t.v. every now and again, but I haven't researched too much.''
Aiken holds more than a dozen offers, including ones from Michigan, Illinois, Wake Forest and UCLA. But he is heading to New Jersey in a few weeks after budgetary problems kept Chaminade Madonna from attending a 7-on-7 at Ohio State.
"I wasn't planning on doing anything, but recently when I talked to coach Fleck, we talked about (visiting),'' Aiken said. "The only other thing I'm thinking about is taking an unofficial visit to UCLA.''
While on the visit to Rutgers, Aiken will take copious mental notes as he tries to figure out how he would fit into the football program, and the academic profile of the school.
"I want to do something along the lines of communications or sports medicine,'' Aiken said. "That's why I want to see different colleges and meet the team. I feel like I'm dedicating four years of my life to a school, so I want to see how the team is together, how the coaches are, because that's going to be my home away from home for a while.
"It's about my education. Can I get a good education at this school just in case I get hurt in football? And what is the family aspect of the team?''
Aiken made 95 tackles and blocked six kicks as a junior, but he figures it will be well into his senior season before he makes a decision.
"I'm going to take while with the recruiting process,'' he said. "I'm not going to commit until the middle of the season, late in the season. It may even be after the season.''
