Boys Latin School (Baltimore, Md.) defensive end Marco Jones was prepared to wait until an appearance at Rutgers’ summer camp for the offer he coveted from the Scarlet Knights.
Then, Rutgers received Jones’ junior highlight film, and it wasn’t long after the 6-foot-3, 250-pounder received his offer from the Scarlet Knights.
“They said the written is in the mail, so it’s a verbal right now,’’ Jones said. “I thought I wasn’t going to get it until the summer. They said everything they wanted to see was in my highlight film.’’
In February, Jones told ScarletReport.com he “always loved Rutgers.’’ This weekend he said he was thrilled to learn from Rutgers defensive line coach Randy Melvin a written offer was coming.
“I really liked it,’’ Jones said. “I was excited and I just couldn’t believe it was coming earlier than I thought. Probably seeing me and coming up to (Rutgers in April) changed it.’’
In addition to watching the junior highlights, Rutgers was able to learn what type of worker and athlete Jones is when Melvin visited Boys Latin School last week.
Among the other schools to visit Jones last week were Pittsburgh, Michigan, Notre Dame, Stanford and Syracuse, and the added attention could change his summer schedule.
Jones now holds double-digits offers, including one from Penn State, so he may not be attending any camps to earn more offers.
“I’m not sure yet,’’ Jones said. “We’re still in the decision-making.’’
But part of Jones’ summer schedule will include trip to a pair of schools, Penn State and Rutgers.
“I really haven’t seen the campus,’’ Jones said of Penn State. “I didn’t go to their junior day, so it’s just really the campus, and what the environment is like. I’ve seen some of the campus, but not really the details.’’
As for Rutgers, Jones said he wants to see “just more of the school. I haven’t seen much of the school.’’
