Although the subject of
the proposed merger of Rutgers, New Jersey Institute of Technology and the
University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey fell under "old business,"
University Senators eagerly discussed it for hours at the senate meeting Friday.
The Senate was the first governing body to issue a formal response to the
proposed merger. Chairman Paul Panayotatos read the Senate report discussing
its views of the proposed merge titled the Initial Response to the Report
of the New Jersey Commission on Health Science, Education and Training.

With the game still scoreless
in the first quarter of play, Rutgers cornerback DeWayne Thompson recovered
a fumble by Notre Dame quarterback Carlyle Holiday, putting the Scarlet Knights
on the 50-yard line with just over eight minutes left in the quarter. Eight
plays and 48 yards later, the Knights found themselves with a new set of downs
on the Irish two-yard line. But after two incomplete passes by quarterback
Ryan Hart, Rutgers attempted an awkward quarterback sneak to break through
to the end zone. As Hart tried to push his way through a tangled pile of linemen,
the freshman QB fumbled on the Notre Dame one, giving the ball back to the
Irish and ending RU's most promising drive of the day. Hart would fumble twice
more before the end of the half.

Men's Basketball
Jerome Coleman, coming
off the worst shooting performance of his career, promised to never again
let down his coaches and teammates.
The senior shooting guard kept his word, scoring a game-high 28 points, including
a pair of free throws with 15.9 seconds remaining to ice a 59-53 Rutgers victory
over Temple before a crowd of 6,845 at the Liacouras Center yesterday.
Coleman
leads Rutgers
After surrendering an
11-point second-half lead at North Carolina Wednesday night, the Rutgers men's
basketball team watched an 18-point lead evaporate to four in the waning minutes
against Temple last night.
The Scarlet Knights managed to escape the Liacouras Center with a 59-53 win,
and they left Philadelphia with the knowledge that although they did not play
well down the stretch, they still defeated a quality opponent on the road.
Rutgers avoids another
last-minute collapse
For the first time in
his Hall of Fame career, Temple basketball coach John Chaney is starting three
freshmen.
Yesterday, as the wisest Owl opened his third decade on North Broad Street,
it showed. And it doesn't figure to be the last time that so much youth isn't
served.

Owls fall to Scarlet Knights
Gary Waters walked into
the Rutgers locker room and wondered if he'd misread the scoreboard.
The Scarlet Knights had defeated Temple, 59-53, moments earlier at Liacouras
Center, posting their biggest road victory during Waters' two seasons at Rutgers.
At least, that's what the scoreboard said.
Lead
stands up against Temple after late scare
After his 2-of-18 effort
from the floor against North Carolina four days earlier, shooting guard Jerome
Coleman desperately wanted to get off to a good start against Temple.
His first shot? A 27-foot air ball.

Senior guard Mauri Horton
scored 23 points and sank a key 3-point basket as Rutgers went on a second-half
tear to defeat California, 56-49, yesterday.
Horton's 3-pointer and a fast-break layup by Chelsea Newton, who had 10 points,
finished a 15-8 run that gave Rutgers a 54-45 lead.

Maybe it's time to start
thinking of Connecticut for something other than basketball. Like football,
maybe?
The UConn players certainly are thinking that way after the biggest victory
in the program's three years in Division I-A. The Huskies beat Iowa State
37-20 in their season finale on Saturday, dominating a team that was ranked
ninth nationally in mid-October.
"We just put ourselves on the map," quarterback Dan Orlovsky said.
"When people hear about UConn from now on, they're going to think basketball
AND football. It's not only going to be a basketball school."
