An 0-2 start, complete
with losses to Division I-AA Villanova and Mid-America Athletic Conference
also-ran Buffalo, created a sense of panic in the "State of Rutgers,"
as Rutgers coach Greg Schiano likes to refer to New Jersey and the state school's
fan and recruiting base.
Years of disenchantment with a middling program -- the team has not had awinning
campaign since 1992 and went to its only bowl game, the Garden State Bowl,
in 1978 -- boiled to the surface in the form of boos and jeers at home games.
There was a change at quarterback, brooding self-evaluation and countless
same answers to the same question: "Yes, we will get this thing turned
around."
A
bit of optimism in the air as Rutgers gets rejuvenated
If there's one coaching
belief that Greg Schiano clings to more than any other, it's this: Good defense
starts with good run defense.
Maybe that explains why no one at Rutgers feels the need any longer to start
running for cover when the Knights resume play following a bye this weekend.

Willingham isn't much on mushy reunions; in fact he's not much on any outward
display of emotion. But talking about Saturday's game against his former team,
