Bobby Brownlie will gather with
friends and family this afternoon at a Piscataway restaurant to await his
call during the Major League Baseball amateur draft.
Once projected as a top-five pick, it's no certainty that Rutgers' junior
right-hander from Edison will be selected in the first round of the draft,
which begins at noon.
"It doesn't really matter to me what round," Brownlie said. "As
long as I am taken by a team that wants to put a winner on the field, I'll
be happy regardless."

"May 1, 1999," Bobby Brownlie says. "That's when I knew."
Brownlie was a senior at Edison High School that afternoon at Somerville's
Southside Park, and he was pitching against Immaculata, which entered the
game 11-0 and ranked second in the state. There were several scouts sprinkled
into the crowd of 300, including one representing the Toronto Blue Jays, who
thought he was there as a casual observer, checking out Immaculata players.
