Jerome Messam has been widely considered as one of Canada's top recruiting
prospects this year. At 6-foot-3 and 234 pounds the young man from
Brampton, Ontario runs a freakish 4.36 forty yard dash. Messam was one of
a number of recruits on hand this weekend for an official to Rutgers.
At 6-foot-3 and 234 pounds, Messam sounds like he has the perfect build for a
fullback at the next level. However, Rutgers was recruiting him as a
tailback, alongside FB Brian Leonard
. Messam was one of eight prospects on
hand this past weekend taking an official visit to Rutgers.
During his junior season, Messam tallied a whopping 26 touchdowns and rushed
for over 2,600 yards during only 9 games.
"Jason Nugent was my host. He showed me around. I knew him from
before and he really likes it there."
Messam's official trip to Rutgers involved a pleasurable getaway to the Big
Apple, a destination he had not been to before this weekend.
"I had a great time. I was loving it. The weight room is awesome,
it's all state-of-the-art. The coaches are really down to earth and laid
back. Coach Schiano, when we met, made me feel real comfortable."
[The trip to New York City] "was fun. I had a lot of fun. We went
to New York on Friday night. We went to ESPN Zone. We played a lot
of video games and they fed us really good. I was loving it."
Still involved in the picture for Messam are South Carolina, Akron, and
Messam stated that he still plans on taking more visits in order that he be
absolutely certain regarding a final destination. Included on his visit
list will be the program that he favored from the very beginning of his
recruitment process - the Spartans of Michigan State.
"I have Akron coming up on the 10th. And Michigan State, I will find
out when I'll visit [them] this Tuesday."
