Remaining Recruiting Targets: Defense

DE Darius Slade

Rutgers heads into August and its 2013 training camp with 20 committed recruits. Looking for a strong finish to the summer in recruiting, Rutgers has key prospects close to decisions on both sides of the ball. ScarletReport.com looks at the defensive prospects first.

ScarletReport.com looks at the remaining Rutgers recruiting targets in the class of 2014 with multiple decisions looming. We begin with a look at recruits on the defensive side of the ball.

Cypress Bay (Fla.) CB Deion Hallmon

Recruitment -- Hallmon cut to 10, then five during July and has his first official visit planned to Syracuse. He named Rutgers as a leader multiple times in his recruitment, but has not set up a visit to campus. West Virginia, Wisconsin and Florida State are also in Hallmon's top five.

Decision -- Hallmon wanted to end his recruitment this summer, but family has him looking to take a few official visits before a fall decision.

Largo (Fla.) CB Cordell Hudson

Recruitment -- Hudson is being recruited hardest by Rutgers and Syracuse, saying a Stanford offer is the one thing that could change the course of his recruitment. Hudson plans to take official visits to both, along with Iowa State and Wake Forest.

Decision -- Hudson wants to take four official visits before a decision, but told ScarletReport.com last week he could see himself choosing to end his recruitment before his senior season. He has no former decision date or timeframe.

Countryside (Clearwater, Fla.) CB Mike Johnson

Recruitment -- Johnson put Rutgers in his top 10 and continues to hear from the staff. Johnson recently visited Vanderbilt and lists Florida State, Louisville and Virginia as the schools on him the hardest.

Decision -- Johnson plans to decide close to National Signing Day.

Scottsdale (Az.) DT Calvin Heurtelou

Recruitment -- Rutgers is a school of new interest for Heurtelou, who has three years to play two out of junior college. Heurtelou grew up just outside of New York and likes the close-to-home option of Rutgers. Miami hosted him on an official visit this summer and Missouri is next on his schedule in early September.

Decision -- Heurtelou plans to decide Thanksgiving weekend and enroll for spring practice.

Montclair (N.J.) DE Darius Slade

Recruitment -- Slade is one of the top overall defensive prospects still on the board. From the same high school (and a relative of) Julian Pinnix-Odrick, Slade listed Rutgers as a slight leader before taking other visits. The talented defensive end is at West Virginia with his family this weekend and has visits set to Michigan State and Rutgers should his decision timeframe remain unchanged.

Decision -- Slade wants to decide before his senior season but will not force anything. He told ScarletReport.com he is aware of the limited space in the Rutgers class and does not want to wait too long for any school.

Village Academy (Delray Beach, Fla.) DE Kevin Bronson

Recruitment -- Rutgers leads for the 243-pound defensive end. Arkansas, UCF, Miami and USF round out his top five.

Decision -- Bronson doesn't plan on making a decision until after his senior season.
