Recruiting is about relationships and Rutgers coach Eddie Jordan’s ties to the DC Assault AAU program paid off in a big way today with the commitment of Junior Etou.
A three-star power forward, Etou played for Jordan as a 17-year old and is set to do so again at Rutgers.
“He played for Eddie with one of our programs before [Jordan] went to the Lakers,” said DC Assault coach Damon Handen. “That’s where that relationship comes from. It’s a good start for Eddie, because he’ll play very hard for Rutgers.”
Etou is the cousin of NBA star Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder and mimics his relative in many ways, Handen said.
“They’re cousins and you’ll see the same exact style in Junior,” he said. “He’s a worker. He’s tough and he rebounds. He’s a good kid too. He wants to work hard.”
Etou chose Rutgers over finalist Washington. The 6-foot-7 power forward is the second commit in as many days to Jordan in just his second week on the job.
“Toughness,” Handen said. “That’s the one word I would use to describe him to you. He’s a great rebound and a great defender. He has a warrior-like mentality.”
