Rutgers Bests Princeton in Road Win

Rutgers rode 22 points from sophomore guard Elijah Carter to a 58-52 victory on the road against Princeton. The Scarlet Knights improved to 2-1 on the season after losing the opener last Friday to St. Peter's.

Rutgers continues to respond positively to the opening-night loss to against St. Peter's. Led by sophomores Elijah Carter and Myles Mack, the Scarlet Knights controlled the pace of the game against Princeton and won their first road game of the season, 58-52.

Bringing a six-point lead into halftime, the Scarlet Knights were in control for most of the second half by holding a multi-possession lead. The Tigers cut the score to four points multiple times, but Rutgers pulled away with five straight points from senior forward Austin Johnson in the final 2:30.

Carter put up his second straight stellar performance since being benched by coach Mike Rice. Carter led all scorers with 22 points in the victory and had his best shooting performance of the season. Coming off the bench, Carter shot 6-for-9 from the floor and made all six of his free throw attempts.

Rutgers started poorly in the first half, but used Carter's hot hand to go on a 19-8 run midway through the half. Highlighted by a three-pointer with four seconds left, the Scarlet Knights brought a six-point lead into halftime.

Carter led all scorers with 16 in the first half and is averaging 20 points per game since heading to the bench. Rice started the same five that he did in the win over Sacred Heart – Carter, Mack, Johnson, junior Wally Judge and junior Mike Poole.

The Scarlet Knights (2-1) return home Tuesday night to face Boston University.
