Sheldon Royster

Former St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) star safety Sheldon Royster intends to transfer out of South Carolina. A four-star recruit and the No. 7 safety in the nation in 2011, Royster picked South Carolina over Rutgers. Will he look at the Scarlet Knights now?

Redshirt freshman safety Sheldon Royster will transfer from South Carolina, confirmed his high school coach Rich Hansen. Making a final decision earlier today, Royster has not yet been granted his release, Hansen said.

Royster has interest in Rutgers and is expected to look seriously at landing with the Scarlet Knights, sources said.

Before Royster is granted his release, however, he will be unable to have contact with other schools and recruits will be able to express interest in him. With the Fall semester starting soon at most schools, Royster is expected to strive for a quick decision.

Due to NCAA transfer rules, Royster will have to sit out the 2012 season and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

The No. 7 safety in the nation and a four-star recruit in 2011, Royster came close to committing to Rutgers out of St. Peter's prep (Jersey City, N.J.) before deciding to leave home to play in the SEC.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound safety was high-school teammates with Rutgers second-year players Savon Huggins and Keith Lumpkin.
