Several schools increased their interest in four-star offensive tackle Ryan Brodie of Long Branch (N…
Top 5 (Realistic) Recruiting Targets
Wayne Morgan and D.J. Singleton are also talents at the position, but Shumate is the most complete of the three and told ScarletReport.com last month that Rutgers was standing out to him along with South Carolina.
After losing out to the Gamecocks on Sheldon Royster last year, Shumate would be a major aquisition for the Scarlet Knights.
4.) Don Bosco CB Yuri Wright — Wright, like Shumate, is a top player at his position and has a strong interest in Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights have more of a need at cornerback than safety in this recruiting class, which puts Wright ahead of Shumate.
3.) Haddonfield Memorial OT Jim Cashman — There is no question offensive line is a gigantic, if not the top, need for Rutgers in the Class of 2012.
Rutgers had its eyes on Cashman for a long time, but did not offer him until earlier in the spring. The 6-foot-7 tackle has more than 25 verbal offers, but Rutgers is in the picture with Cashman.
2.) Long Branch OT Ryan Brodie — To many, Brodie is the "must-get" of this recruiting class. Rutgers has been in contact with Brodie longer than any other school, but there is a lot of competition for the talented Long Branch lineman.
Brodie is a Jersey guy and has good relationships with former teammates Miles Shuler and Travis Patterson. Many coaches are involved in Brodie's recruitment and he is arguable the No. 1 recruit on the list when positional need is factored in.
1.) Don Bosco DE Darius Hamilton — Of the top recruits in the country, Rutgers is in the best shape with Hamilton. The Scarlet Knights need a true pass-rushing end in this class and it does not get any better than Hamilton.
Hamilton named Rutgers his "top choice" last week because of the environment at Rutgers and his relationship with assistant Jeff Hafley, but there is a long way to go in his recruiting path.
Getting Hamilton would be the defensive version of Savon Huggins last year. Hamilton could make an immediate impact on the Rutgers defense and a huge splash in the recruiting scene. Former teammates Gary Nova and Paul Canevari are in his ear along with former Don Bosco and Rutgers star Mike Teel. Hamilton's decision, however, is not expected to come any time soon.
