Four-Star Va. DT to Visit Rutgers

Koren Kirven

Four-star defensive tackle Koren Kirven holds double-digit verbal offers and will visit Rutgers this summer along with six other schools. Come inside to find out the deciding factor in the Lynchburg, Va., native's interest in Rutgers University.

Of every head coach, assistant and recruiter after Koren Kirven, P.J. Fleck sticks out as one of his favorites.

Kirven, from Brookville High School (Lynchburg, Va.), said his relationship with Rutgers' wide receivers coach encouraged him to set up a visit to Piscataway. Kirven will visit Rutgers in late June, he said.

"Coach Fleck really stands out," Kirven said. "He's really good with young kids. He gets to me on Facebook a lot. He's a cool guy, lots of energy."

Kirven plans to visit Notre Dame, Rutgers, Alabama, Tennesse, Penn State, Stanford and Colorado.

"Rutgers is in there because the coaches are really cool," Kirven said, who also knows head coach Greg Schiano. "They stay in touch really well. They're persistent with me."

Though Kirven grew up three hours away in Washington, D.C., he said his knowledge of Rutgers is minimal.

"I feel like I'm going to at least check them out to see if I like them," Kirven said. "I want to get to know the coaches. I really don't know much about them, so I don't know if it could be a good fit for me, but I want to find out. I'm open to them."

Kirven is a four-star member of the Class of 2012 and ranked as the No. 17 overall defensive tackle in the nation. Kirven said colleges like him as both a defensive tackle and defensive end at the next level with his 6-foot-4, 260-pound frame.

With Rutgers, he said, he is unsure of whether he would be an end or tackle.

"Either way is fine with me," Kirven said. "As long as I play."

Kirven was among the top performers at a Nike camp at Duke University over the weekend, but has a few weeks left in his junior year before getting more involved in recruiting.

"It's pretty good right now," he said. "I'm excited for school to wrap up because that means visits. I'm going hard."

Kirven will not cut his 12 verbal offers until after he visits Rutgers, he said.

"I'll narrow it down in July," Kirven said. "Everybody is even. I'm open to everybody."
