Know the Knights: Tyler Bellia

Tyler Bellia

Spring practice begins March 29, and each day leading up to it ScarletReport.com will unveil another player in the "Know the Knights" feature. Today's profile piece is on walk-on quarterback Tyler Bellia, who will play a prominent role in the 15 practice sessions.

Rutgers quarterbacking depth is a question, even with the signing of two quarterbacks in the 2011 class.

Beyond starter Chas Dodd sits Steve Shimko, the only other scholarship quarterback on Rutgers' roster. While it doesn't mean a player like walk-on like Tyler Bellia has an inside track toward playing time, it does give Bellia a better chance than most walk-ons to get meaningful reps in the spring.

In the latest installment of "Know the Knights," ScarletReport.com takes a closer look at Bellia:

Tyler Bellia

2011 Eligibility:Red-shirt sophomore
Ht.: 6-4 Wt: 215
Position: Quarterback
High school: Paramus (N.J.) Catholic High
Background: Spent 2010 as a red-shirt member of the scout team after transferring from Wagner College. …Did not play as a freshman at Wagner in 2009. …Threw for nine touchdowns and ran for eight as a senior at Paramus Catholic. …Spent three years at Clarkson North High (New City, N.Y.), where he played varsity football as a junior.

Projected 2011 Role: Bellia transferred to Rutgers and walked-on after spending a year at Wagner, and got plenty of reps with the scout team offense in the fall. He will get a chance to throw a lot of balls in the spring practice as well because of the lack of depth at quarterback.
Besides starter Chas Dodd, the only other scholarship quarterback on the roster for the spring is Steve Shimko, and there are questions whether his surgically-repaired shoulder will be ready for the spring.
It means someone will get reps with the second-team offense, and Bellia is in the mix with Jason Friday.
It remains a long shot for Bellia to have a game-day role with the Scarlet Knights because Gary Nova and Mike Bimonte are coming to school in June, but he could work his way into position with a strong spring.
